As we transition from summer to autumn there is a noticeable chill in the air here in North Dorset. Of course, there are many wonderful things to embrace about the autumn season such as cosy jumpers, homemade crumbles and custard, hearty stews and the beautiful changing landscape of our delightful countryside. However, for many, the colder seasons are a time of trepidation.
It is so important to stay warm and well over autumn and winter, something that can be very challenging, so we've put together this little checklist that may help you to feel a little more organised and prepared:
When you turn on the heating try to maintain an ambient temperature of at least 18-21 degrees c (64 - 70f)
Utilise draft excluders, draft seals, or rolled up towels along windows or doors
Ensure you have sufficient warm, and where necessary, waterproof clothing
Use hot water bottles to pre warm your bed or favourite chair
Switch to sipping warm drinks throughout the day
Eat regular hot meals and switch to hot snacks
Incorporate 5 portions of fruit and veg into your daily diet to load up on vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants to support immunity
Update your list of emergency contacts
Schedule those essential vaccinations
Refresh your supply of cold weather remedies and first aid supplies
Make sure you have warm blankets and a torch with batteries in case of a power cut
Stock up on hand sanitiser to combat germs out and about
Move around regularly to boost your circulation
Stay connected with others so you don't feel isolated
On that last point, did you know that here at Age Concern Sturminster Newton we also run low impact fitness classes? These wonderful sessions focus on gentle movement to improve balance and mobility in the safe and welcoming environment of Sturfit Gym. Alongside our classes, which take place on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings, we run coffee mornings where you can enjoy refreshments in the company of others, make social connections, and hopefully new friends.
Improving your balance and movement is a great way to improve your overall wellbeing, indeed many of our clients have told us that they repeat the exercises between classes!
