Keep Warm This Winter

We recently took part in the Christmas Tree Festival at St Mary's Church in Sturminster Newton. To represent our charity we chose the theme 'Keep Warm This winter' adorning our tree with little mittens, hats, jumpers, hot water bottles, and other cosy decorations.

Keeping warm, for some, feels like a luxury, when in actual fact is is something that we all deserve. If you, or someone you know, is facing hardship, there are a number of resources available that can help, namely:

www.helpforhouseholds.campaign.gov.uk On this government website you will find lots of energy saving tips, as well as information on cost of living assistance in many other areas, such as water supply, phone, and broadband access.

www.warmwelcome.uk/find-a-space A directory of warm spaces where you can go to keep warm, and in some cases enjoy refreshments and activities.

www.ukenergysupport.co.uk This is a government scheme with the aim of enhancing home energy efficiency, reducing emissions and energy bills across the UK.

www.healthyhomesdorset.org.uk This locally based organisation offers a grant know as HUG. They may be able to install free loft or cavity wall insulation, new heating systems and boilers. They also offer free and impartial energy advice.

There are also ways to help yourself stay warm and healthy this winter, such as:

  • Wear layers - Layering clothing rather than wearing one bulky item will trap the heat between the layers and keep you warmer, especially when going out.

  • Keep moving - Make sure you move about, regularly if you can, in order to boost circulation. If you are sitting, pop your feet up on a stool as it is coldest closer to the ground.

  • Sip warm drinks and eat regular hot meals - Budget friendly, warming meals include porridge, jacket potatoes, stews and soups. The last two are particularly good as you can freeze them in individual portions making them very cost efficient too.

If you are struggling to provide yourself with enough nourishing food, there are many social supermarkets around the country that can help. Locally we have The Vale Pantry www.valepantry.co.uk run by volunteers serving Sturminster Newton and North Dorset.

If you would like any further information our advice line is open Monday to Friday from 9.30am to 1.30pm on 01258 475582 alternatively you can email info@acnorthdorset.org.uk
